Set customer prices and volume breaks

Most customers pay the prices on their pricing tier. On Portal → Pricing you go further: a price for one customer on one product, a contract price that holds between two dates, or a lower price from a quantity up for everyone on a tier. The customer portal and quotes both use these prices, so a buyer sees the same price in their catalog as on the quote you send them.

Before you begin

  • You need permission to manage the customer portal. Without it, the Portal tab doesn't appear on the customers page.
  • Check the customer's pricing tier, because volume breaks and the account discount work from it. It's Default Pricing Tier on the customer's page, or Pricing tier in the account's Dealer settings. A customer without one uses your default tier. See Create and edit a customer.
  • A customer price is in one currency. Use the currency of the customer's pricing tier, or the price is never used. See Work in multiple currencies.

How a price is chosen

For each product, SKU.io takes the first of these that applies to the customer at the quantity being bought:

  1. Contract price: a customer override with an Effective From or Effective To date, while today falls within those dates.
  2. Customer price: a customer override with no dates.
  3. Volume break: a quantity break on the customer's pricing tier.
  4. Tier price: the product's price on the customer's pricing tier, less the account's Discount % if it has one. On your default tier, a quote shows this as List price.

When a product has several overrides or breaks, the one with the highest Min Qty the quantity reaches is used. With breaks at 1, 100 and 500, an order of 250 gets the 100 price.

When none of them applies, for example because the product has no price on the tier, the portal can't sell it, and a quote line shows No price set for you to type a price.

Steps

Give a customer its own price or a contract price

  1. Go to Contacts → Customers, then click the Portal tab and Pricing.

  2. Check that Customer Overrides is selected, then click Add Override.

  3. In Product, search for and pick the product.

  4. In Customer, search for and pick the customer.

  5. In Price, type the price per unit.

  6. In Min Qty, enter the quantity the price starts at. Leave 1 for every quantity.

  7. In Currency, type the three-letter code of the customer's pricing tier currency, such as USD.

  8. To make it a contract price, pick Effective From, Effective To, or both. Leave both blank for a standing customer price.

  9. Click Create. Override created confirms it, and the row shows Contract or Standing in the Type column.

To give the same customer a lower price on bigger orders, add another override for the same product with a higher Min Qty.

Add volume breaks to a pricing tier

A volume break lowers the price from a quantity up for every customer on one pricing tier.

  1. On Portal → Pricing, click Quantity Breaks.

  2. Click Add Break.

  3. In Product, search for and pick the product.

  4. In Pricing Tier, pick the tier.

  5. In Min Quantity, enter the quantity the price starts at, such as 500.

  6. In Price, type the price per unit from that quantity.

  7. Click Create. Break created confirms it.

Add one break per step of the ladder, for example 100 and 500.

Take a percentage off a customer's tier prices

  1. On the Portal tab, click Accounts, then open the customer's account.
  2. Click Dealer settings.
  3. Under Account discount & ordering rules, type the percentage in Discount %.
  4. Click Save.

The discount comes off the tier price only. Contract prices, customer prices and volume breaks aren't discounted again.

Change or remove a price

The Customer Price Overrides and Tier Quantity Breaks tables list every price you've set. To find one, search by product and customer, or by product and tier.

ColumnWhat it shows
ProductThe product's SKU and name, which open the product.
Customer (overrides)The customer, which opens the customer.
Tier (breaks)The pricing tier the break belongs to.
PriceThe price per unit, in the override's currency.
Min QtyThe quantity the price starts at.
Type (overrides)Contract when the override has dates, Standing when it doesn't.
Effective (overrides)The dates the contract price holds, or — for none.
  • To change one, click its pencil icon, change the fields and click Save. In grid view you can also change Price and Min Qty in the cell.
  • To remove one, click its delete icon and confirm with Delete.

Things to know

  • Contract prices end on their own. The day after Effective To, the contract price stops applying and the customer falls back to the next price in the list. A contract that hasn't reached Effective From doesn't apply yet.
  • Volume breaks count whole units. On a quote, 499.5 units haven't reached a 500 break.
  • Quotes follow the quantity. On a quote, a line priced from these rules is looked up again when you change its quantity, so it moves on to a break as soon as the quantity reaches it. A price you type yourself stays put. See How quote prices are worked out.
  • Quote templates re-price. A quote started from a template picks up the new customer's contract price, customer price or volume break. See Copy a quote or start from a template.
  • Prices already on a sent quote don't change. Changing an override affects new quotes, and lines added or re-priced from now on.
