How quote prices are worked out
When you add a product to a quote without typing a price, SKU.io prices it for the quote's customer. It checks the customer's own prices first, then the volume breaks on their pricing tier, then the tier price itself. A caption under each price on the quote says which one it used, so you can tell a contract price from a list price at a glance. This is the same order the customer portal uses, so a buyer sees the same price in the portal as on your quote.
The order SKU.io checks prices in
For a product line, SKU.io takes the first price that applies, in this order:
- Contract price: a price agreed with this customer for this product for a set period, which is in effect today.
- Customer price: a standing price for this customer on this product, with no end date.
- Volume break: the price the customer's pricing tier gives once the quantity reaches a break, such as 250 units or more.
- Tier price: the product's price in the customer's pricing tier, less the customer's own discount percentage if they have one.
- List price: the product's price in your default pricing tier, used when the customer is on the default tier.
A contract price or customer price can also have a minimum quantity. It applies only once the line reaches that quantity, and until then SKU.io keeps looking down the list.
You set up contract prices and customer prices per customer, and volume breaks per pricing tier. See Set customer prices and volume breaks. A customer's pricing tier is their Default Pricing Tier, on the customer's record. Tier prices themselves are covered in Manage pricing tiers and Set a product price.
What the caption under a price means
Each product line on a quote shows where its Unit Price came from, in small text under the price. Hover over the caption to read what it means.
| Caption | What it means | Changes with the quantity? |
|---|---|---|
| Contract price | The customer's contract price for this product. Contract price (10+) means it starts at 10 units. | Yes |
| Customer price | The price set for this customer on this product. Customer price (10+) means it starts at 10 units. | Yes |
| Volume break 250+ | The customer's pricing tier gives this price from 250 units up. | Yes |
| Tier price | The base price of the customer's pricing tier, less any customer discount. | Yes |
| List price | The default pricing tier's price. | Yes |
| No price set (in orange) | The product has no price for the customer's pricing tier, so the line is priced at zero. Type a price, or set one on the product. | Yes |
| Manual | Someone typed this price on the quote. | No. It stays as entered. |
See a product's volume breaks
When the customer's pricing tier has volume breaks for a product, a stairs icon appears next to the caption. Hover over it to see Volume breaks for the customer: each break's starting quantity and price, with the one that applies now in bold. When a line has breaks but no other caption, the caption reads Volume pricing.
When SKU.io looks the price up again
A line whose price SKU.io worked out keeps following the customer's prices:
- When you change the quantity. SKU.io looks the price up again for the new quantity, so a line that goes from 200 to 300 units picks up a 250+ break without anyone checking the price list. Breaks count whole units: 249.5 units hasn't reached the 250+ break.
- When you start a quote from a template. Lines the template priced from the price list are priced again for the customer you pick. Prices typed on the template stay as they are. See Copy a quote or start from a template.
These changes don't touch existing prices:
- Typing a price. The line becomes Manual and keeps your price when the quantity changes.
- Changing the customer on a draft. The lines keep their prices, and the confirmation says Line prices were not changed. To price the lines for the new customer, delete and re-add them, or type the prices.
- Repricing to a tier with the Pricing Tier chip above the lines. It writes each tier price in as a typed price, so the lines become Manual and stop following volume breaks. See Add and edit quote lines.
Lines without a product, such as revenue lines for shipping or handling, are always priced by hand.
In the New Quote dialog
In the New Quote dialog, a product you add without typing a price shows the price the customer you picked gets, with a caption saying where it comes from, such as Volume price (100+), Contract price or Customer's tier price. It updates when you change the customer or the quantity, and the quote is created at that price when you click Create Quote. If you type a price in the dialog, the line starts as Manual.
Quotes without a customer
A quote with no customer is priced from your default pricing tier, so its lines show List price. Customer prices and volume breaks need a customer, so none apply and no breaks are listed.
Quotes in another currency
A customer's prices and volume breaks are in the currency of their pricing tier, and SKU.io doesn't convert currencies on quotes. So:
- When the quote's Currency matches the customer's pricing tier, the full order above applies.
- When it doesn't, SKU.io skips contract prices, customer prices and volume breaks. The line takes the tier's price as a plain number, without converting it and without the customer's discount. Check those prices before you send.
- Changing the Currency on a draft quote doesn't convert the prices already on it. The numbers stay the same and are shown in the new currency.
- A shipping rate you quoted before changing the currency can't be applied. SKU.io shows This rate was quoted in USD, but the order is now in EUR. Quote shipping again. (with your currencies).
