Re-sign-off a restated month

When something dated in a closed month changes after you sign it off, and the change is over your review threshold, the month reads Closed – restated. It stays closed, but it asks for a new sign-off. A re-sign-off saves a new report pack as the month's numbers of record, keeps the earlier one in History, and returns the month to Closed. You don't reopen the month to do this. For how SKU.io spots the change, see When a closed month changes.

Before you begin

  • The month must read Closed – restated. A month that only shows Balance moved needs no sign-off: its tag clears when the earlier month is re-signed.
  • You need the Accounting Manage Settings permission (accounting.manage_settings). Without it, Re-sign-off is greyed out, and hovering it reads You do not have permission to sign off a period. Re-check in the dialog needs the Accounting Sync permission (accounting.sync). See Who can do what in the close.
  • If an independent reviewer is required, the people recorded as changing the month since its sign-off can't re-sign it. Ask a colleague to do it. See Who can re-sign a month.
  • The month must not be on or before your hard close date. A hard-locked month can't change, so it never needs a re-sign-off.
  • Know why the figures moved, and have your reason ready. The reason is required and stays on the month.

Steps

  1. Go to Accounting → Close.
  2. Open the restated month. Click its tile on the Year board (it reads Closed – restated and Change since sign-off), or click its name in Changes since sign-off. The month drawer opens.
  3. Read the tiles at the top: Net income change, Accounts changed and Reaching your provider. The line below them says when the change was found and who last signed the month off.
  4. Read Changes by account. Own change is what moved because of entries dated in this month.
  5. Read Why it changed to see which documents changed after the sign-off. Click a document to open it and confirm the change is right.
  6. If you have just corrected something, click Re-check in the drawer header to compare the month with the live books again. A message reads Re-check started — this month updates when it finishes.
  7. Click Re-sign-off in the drawer header. The Re-sign-off March 2026 dialog opens.
  8. Review the tiles and the Review of changes table. Report differences counts the authoritative reports with a difference, for example 3 of 6, with informational reports left out.
  9. Under Checks, click Run all checks if a note says some checks show their results at the last sign-off. Those checks take a while, so they run in the background and the dialog updates when the job finishes.
  10. Resolve or acknowledge each check listed under Checks. Tick each warning to sign off with it unresolved. Tick each open review item too: it reads — left open at the last sign-off; tick to confirm it's handled for this re-sign-off. A closed month's checklist can't be edited, so every manual item left unticked at the last sign-off always appears here as an acknowledgement.
  11. Type why you're signing the month off again in Reason for re-sign-off (required), for example Reviewed the bill correction and the re-dated stock take.
  12. Add anything else in Notes (optional).
  13. Click Re-sign-off March 2026. A message reads Re-signing March 2026 — track progress in the job tray.

The re-sign-off runs in the job tray as Re-sign Accounting Period: and the month. It runs every check again first. When it finishes, the tray reads March 2026 re-signed. The new numbers are its latest revision.

What a re-sign-off does

The dialog lists this under What happens when you sign off:

  • A new report pack is saved and becomes the month's baseline. The earlier revision stays in History.
  • The month goes back to Closed. Your reason is kept on the month.
  • Later months' Balance moved tags clear. They don't need a sign-off.
  • Nothing posts, and nothing changes in your accounting provider.

Afterwards:

  • The sign-off banner reads Re-signed off by, the name, the date and time, and revision 2 (see History), with your reason and notes underneath.
  • History adds Re-signed after a change of and the amount, and Revision 2 saved, with an Open revision 2 link.
  • Each later month that showed Balance moved gets Revision N: balances refreshed, no sign-off in its history. Nobody signs those.
  • The Report pack reads Signed off and today's date. Its Sign-off revision picker still offers Revision 1 so you can read what you first signed.
  • SKU.io captures your provider's trial balance afresh for the new revision. Each earlier revision keeps the one it was signed on.

If an entry in the change can't reach Xero or QuickBooks, the Can't reach warning stays after the re-sign-off. Signing off doesn't send it. See Changes and your accounting provider.

The checks in the dialog

The checks run as they stand now, not as they were when the month was first signed. They all run again when you confirm. If one fails then, the job tray says why and nothing changes.

  • Blocking checks must be resolved first. A check that can be gone over offers a reason box, Why is this being signed off over?, if you hold the Accounting Period Override permission (accounting.period.override). The reason is recorded on the month.
  • Warnings each need a tick to sign off with them unresolved. Open review items each need a tick to confirm they're handled for this re-sign-off.
  • Slow checks, such as Provider documents reconciled and Trial balance reconciled to provider, show their result at the last sign-off until you click Run all checks. Their fresh results stand for 30 minutes. Run all checks doesn't change the checklist the month was signed on.

While the checks load, the confirm button's tooltip reads The checks are still running. Until you type a reason, it reads Enter a reason first. It's kept with the month.

For what each check means, see What stops a close, and what only needs a tick.

Who can re-sign a month

Re-sign-off follows the same independent-review rule as a close. When Require an independent reviewer (on Accounting → Settings → Close, under Independent review) applies to your team:

  • The dialog shows Independent review required and names who can't sign, for example Someone other than Alex Morgan has to sign March 2026 off again. The people named are the ones recorded as changing the month since its sign-off.
  • If you're one of them, the confirm button stays disabled with You changed this month after it was signed off, so someone else has to review the change and re-sign it. When nobody else holds the permission, it adds Nobody else can re-sign it right now: give another user the "Accounting → Manage Settings" permission.
  • A change nobody is recorded as making, such as a sync or a rebuild, leaves anyone with the permission free to re-sign.
  • If you're the only accounting user, nobody else can review the month. The dialog asks Why is this being signed off without a second reviewer? Your answer goes on the month's record.

See Review and close a month someone else prepared.
